The Pianist

Two years ago Pianist Roope Göndahl was diagnosed with  Multiple sclerosis. The disease disrupts the ability of parts of the nervous system to communicate, resulting in a range of signs. Specific symptoms can include double vision, muscle weakness, trouble with sensation, or trouble with coordination. Something that are quite inevitable for a classical pianist.

I was assigned to portray Roope for Image Magazine last summer in Kuhmo chamber music festival. I also shot a video for it.

“Illness is the night-side of life, a more onerous citizenship. Everyone who is born holds dual citizenship, in the kingdom of the well and in the kingdom of the sick. Although we all prefer to use only the good passport, sooner or later each of us is obliged, at least for a spell, to identifyourselves as citizens of that other place” (Susan Sontag, 1979,  Illness as Metaphor).
